When you visit Detroit Public TV’s Riley Broadcast Center in Wixom (and we hope you will), you’ll enter the Sam and Jean Frankel lobby, as noted by frosted white text on glass doors. The signage is an elegant, understated acknowledgement of Mr. and Mrs. Frankel’s generous contribution to Detroit Public TV’s capital campaign, and judging from the nice obituary in this week’s Detroit News, that’s just how Sam would have wanted it.
I did not know Samuel Frankel, who passed away this week at age 94, but I’m certainly familiar with his considerable achievements, both civic and philanthropic. I’m struck especially by the Frankel family’s strong support of cultural and educational institutions including the University of Michigan, Cranbrook, Detroit Science Center, Detroit Public TV, and so many others. The Jean and Samuel Frankel Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit has as its motto “where learning, leadership and commitment come together.” It seems to me that Sam Frankel was the embodiment of those three qualities. On behalf of my colleagues here at Detroit Public Television, we extend our condolences and gratitude to the Frankel family and take heart in our memories of Sam Frankel and a life well lived.
