Suspense alert! We’re presenting a mini-Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival on our Chase Film Festival series with 1954’s “Dial M for Murder” on July 18th at 9 p.m., followed by “Strangers on a Train” from 1951 on July 25 at 9 p.m. on WTVS Detroit Public Television Channel 56.
As with all our Friday night films, they are uncut, uninterrupted and introduced by Elliot Wilhelm, the film curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Elliot is your trusted guide to the movies with great stories about the making of each film. For example, tune in this Friday and discover how Hitchcock shot “Dial M” in 3-D (to complete with the 3-D craze at that time) but used it differently than other directors.
For the July 25 film, Elliot has this to say, “I’m tempted to call ‘Strangers on a Train,’ a perfect movie, because in it Hitchcock expresses a vision central to all of his work – that alongside the normal, everyday world most of us inhabit, there is a ‘parallel track,’ inhabited by people who actually commit the crimes that we ‘regular’ folks sometimes fantasize about – even though we don’t like to ADMIT to such fantasies, even to ourselves. If you’ve never seen this film – or haven’t seen it for a while – prepare yourself for an amazing, thrilling ride.”
I’ll be there and I hope you will be too. Lock the doors, curl up on the couch and let Detroit Public Television help you explore the genius of Alfred Hitchcock. Oh… one last plug… if you’re fascinated by the music in movies, listen to “Film Classics with Jack Goggin” on WRCJ 90.9 FM Sunday nights at 6 p.m. Online at wrcjfm.org. In the meantime, enjoy the Chase Film Festival Friday nights at 9 on WTVS Detroit Public TV. For information on your favorite shows check out our website at http://www.dptv.org/.
