drive to the edge of a volcano in Hawaii , and ran into an obstacle
known as the Pacific Ocean . It’s a fact that I’m really looking
forward to exploring the
GREAT LODGES OF THE NATIONAL PARKS.
This two-part program on successive Wednesdays, June 25 and July 2 at 8 p.m., will take us places that I’ve always wanted to visit - the Alaskan Wilderness, Death Valley , the Grand Tetons, and that elusive Hawaiian Volcano. How convenient, especially when these National Parks temporarily and geographically stretch beyond my budget. At about $60 a tank, I’ll be parking in Michigan this year.
We were talking about upcoming programs on Detroit Public TV yesterday when a spontaneous quiz question erupted. “Are there national parks in Michigan ?”
Isle Royale and Sleeping Bear Dunes were a couple of favorites sites that were quickly mentioned. In recent years, my summers have not been complete without a dune climb, always accompanied by the kids’ insistence that the hike gets higher and farther each year.
If there is any positive side to the jump in gasoline prices, it is that many of us will stay closer to home this summer to experience the wonders of our state. Share a favorite Michigan vacation story with us, and we’ll send three winners a copy of Michigan Family Field Trips, Ellyce Field’s helpful new guide to many great local attractions published by The University of Michigan Press. Have a great summer.
